Chelsea Handler, Political Commentator?

In an interview with Marie Claire, Chelsea Handler said that she plans to tackle more serious topics on her late-night show,Chelsea Lately, next season. (She's also moving into Conan O'Brien's old studio.)

There was a period of time when I started getting antsy and was like, 'Ugh, I can't sit here and gossip anymore,' she told the magazine.I want to talk about politics and human-interest stories,like when somebody shoots somebody else at a drive-through over Chicken McNuggets stupid stuff like that."

Hedging aside, Handler seems like just the kind of secret genius who could give the political-comedy boys club (Jon Stewart, Bill Maher, D.L. Hughley) a run for their money. Plus, her Mormon upbringing is especially relevant this election season.
